SUMMARY:Lunch Talk: "Usakos. A Vision of the Future."
DESCRIPTION:Lunch Talk with Saara Ilovu (Usakos Museum Advisory Committee\, Namibia). \nUsakos is\, in a way\, like many towns in Southern Africa\, small and with high levels of poverty and unemployment. But Usakos is also unique. Its residents have unique stories to tell and the ruins\, rusting metalwork and fading signs reflect a unique history as the railway hub of Namibia. In this talk Saara Ilovu\, the Local Economic Development Officer & Cooperation Communication with the Karibib Town Council and Secretary of the Usakos Museum Advisory Committee\, introduces the recently launched Usakos Town Museum project. The Musum project is in part linked to the exhibition and research project “Usakos. Photography beyond ruins” between students and researchers of the Universität Basel and the University of Namibia. Introduction by Giorgio Miescher.

SUMMARY:Colonial Photography Archives and Visual History of Namibia
DESCRIPTION:In the context of the exhibition Y/Our Colonial Gaze the Basler Afrika Bibliographien invites to a workshop with Lorena Rizzo. The discussion will focus on questions relating to colonial photo archives and photographic practice in colonial settings\, and the relevance of these for post-colonial visual history/studies. In a first part of the workshop\, Lorena Rizzo will present own research positions whilst the second part engages with the exhibition. Lorena Rizzo’s work focuses on (post-) colonial visual histories and culture in southern Africa.  Her current publications include “Policing the Image: the Breakwater prison albums\, Cape Town\, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries” (2016) and contributions to the photo volume “Usakos. Photographs beyond Ruins. The Old Location Albums\, 1920s to 1960s” (2015). \n

SUMMARY:The Colonial Home in sub-Saharan Africa: an Entangled History
DESCRIPTION:This talk by Britta Schilling will delve into the private dimensions of European empire in Africa through a comparative analysis of colonial homes using three case studies in sub-Saharan Africa. Following recent historiography on domesticity\, ‘home’ here is understood in both its ideological and material dimensions. What can architecture\, interior spatial arrangements and domestic objects tell us about everyday life in the colonial home? How might a study of the colonial home lead to a better understanding of interactions between coloniser and colonised? And\, finally\, what legacies have colonial homes left in sub-Saharan Africa today? \nBritta Schilling is Assistant Professor in Cultural History at Utrecht University. She is the author of Postcolonial Germany: Memories of Empire in a Decolonized Nation (Oxford\, 2014) and is currently working on a comparative history of colonial homes in British\, French and German territories in sub-Saharan Africa. \nThis talk is part of the research seminar African History\, organised by the BAB and the History Department of the University of Basel.

SUMMARY:Conversations with the Past. Collaborative Readings of Personal and Cultural Photographs from Southern Africa in the 1980s
DESCRIPTION:In her presentation Biddy Partridge offers recorded conversations with two young South Africans\, as they explore together several photographs of musicians Jimmy Cliff\, (taken in Johannesburg in 1979) and Winston Ngozi Mankunku (again taken in Johannesburg\, in 1984). Their comments are interwoven with music and video\, and with Biddy’s narrative about her work in those years (1979 – 1999). And some collaborative reflections on her role as a (white) photographer. \nHer presentation takes place in the context of the exhibition Y/Our colonial gaze which reflects critically about (colonial) photo archives\, photographic and curatorial practice.

SUMMARY:Reconciliation’s Waste: The Monument for the Distribution of Wealth and the Ruins of the Post-Apartheid Memorial Complex
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation Duane Jethro wants to explore what we are to make of South Africa’s memorial complex\, to riff on Ciraj Rassool’s ideas of complexes\, two decades into democracy. The paper will present and discuss a number of ruined post-apartheid monuments and memorials and critically engage with the significance of their relative ‘success’ and ‘failure’\, construction and destruction\, making and unmaking\, and ultimately\, interrogate the ideological significance of heritage as a vehicle for promoting values such as reconciliation and nation building. \nDuane Jethro is a 2017 Alexander von Humboldt Post-Doctoral Fellow based at the Centre for Anthropological Research for Museums and Heritage\, CARMaH\, chaired by Professor Sharon Macdonald\, at the Humboldt University\, Berlin. A graduate of the University of Utrecht\, his work focusses on the intersections between material culture\, heritage\, aesthetics and the senses. His post-doctoral project\, Aesthetics and Difference\, looks at the work of commemorations under changing social and temporal conditions in Berlin. He has held a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Archive and Public Culture Research Initiative at the University of Cape Town and has published in African Diaspora\, Tourist Studies and Material Religion. \nThis presentation is part of the Research Colloquium Namibian & Southern African Studies\, organised by the BAB and the Centre of African Studies.

DESCRIPTION:Die Ausstellung Y/OUR COLONIAL GAZE bietet einen Einblick in das beeindruckende Bildarchiv der Basler Afrika Bibliographien. Gezeigt werden Fotografien aus Namibia und Südafrika der 1950er und 1960er Jahre von den  deutschen Fotografinnen Ruth Dammann und Anneliese Scherz sowie des Schweizer Journalist Hans Jenny. \nWas macht Fotografien aus der Kolonialzeit problematisch? Wie lässt sich koloniale Bildästhetik charakterisieren\, lesen und erkennen? Wer darf entscheiden\, welche Fotografien\, welche Dokumente an ein grösseres Publikum gelangen? Wo liegen die Grenzen der Neugierde? \nDie konzeptuell ausgerichteten Ausstellung experimentiert mit künstlerischen\, kuratorischen und wissenschaftlichen Herangehensweisen. Sie erzählt von subjektiven Selektionsprozessen\, von politischen Auswahl- und Bewertungskriterien\, Unsicherheiten und Überforderung sowie von der Unmöglichkeit\, die betroffenen Menschen – auch die Fotografinnen und Fotografen – um ihre eigene Version der Geschichte(n) zu bitten. \nDie Ausstellung ist von Studierenden der Universität Basel in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Archiv der Basler Afrika Bibliographien erarbeitet worden. \nDie Vernissage findet am 29. DESCRIPTION:The Research Colloquium aims at creating a forum for local and international scholars to engage in cross-disciplinary and methodological debates in Southern African Studies\, with particular reference to Namibian Studies. The Colloquium welcomes presentations and discussions relating to current research and seeks to engage young and upcoming scholars. It is open to all levels and guests are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Liebe Freunde der Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, \nwir möchten alle\, die zu Namibia arbeiten und forschen\, zum 4. Namibia Research Day am Freitag\, den 29. September 2017\, einladen. \nDer Namibia Research Day zielt darauf ab\, Studierende und WissenschaftlerInnen aller Levels und aller Disziplinen zum Austausch ihrer Forschungen\, ihrer Erfahrungen und Erwartungen zusammenzubringen. Der Anlass bietet die Möglichkeit\, laufende oder kürzlich abgeschlossene Forschungsarbeiten zu Namibia vorzustellen\, zu diskutieren und andere Kollegen\, die zur selben Region Afrikas arbeiten\, kennenzulernen. Gleichzeitig bietet der Tag die Gelegenheit zur Diskussion von praxisbezogenen Aspekten wie z.B. archivarische und institutionelle Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen in Namibia oder die Frage nach akademischen Kooperationen. \nDer Namibia Research Day wendet sich explizit an alle Forschungsdisziplinen und fokussiert auf Themen\, die allen Forschenden zugänglich sind. Zur Anmeldung bitten wir um eine kurze Forschungs- bzw. Projektzusammenfassung (nicht mehr als eine Seite). Format und Programm des Tages werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt mitgeteilt. Am Abend des 29. DESCRIPTION:The Stolen Moments research project traced popular Namibian music cultures which were either suppressed or ignored under the apartheid system. As part of the Basler Afrika Bibliographien’s series Archive Talks\, the project leaders Aino Moongo (Windhoek/Bayreuth) and Thorsten Schütte (Stuttgart) explain historical music trends from Namibian townships and dance halls and reflect about their treasure hunts with Namibian musicians. The talk is moderated by Dag Henrichsen and takes place inside the exhibition space Stolen Moments. Namibian Music History Untold at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien.

SUMMARY:Stolen Moments - Namibian Music History Untold
DESCRIPTION:Stolen Moments – Namibian Music History Untold is an exhibition about stories\, adventures and experiences of the people who shaped Namibian popular music from the 1950s to the 1980s\, and whose rich legacy was almost completely destroyed by the cruel exploitation of the apartheid state. \nVisitors are taken on a musical journey throughout which questions of cultural identity as well as matters of daily life are explored. How did musicians in Namibia live back then? Who influenced them musically? How did artists deal with the restrictions of the apartheid system? What repercussions did socio-political realities have on their careers? What concessions had to be made? \n  \nThe exhibition is the outcome of an extensive four-year research project conducted by the Stolen Moments research group \, and draws on a comprehensive multi-media database which the group compiled in the course of the project. SUMMARY:The Poetic Potential of Archives: A Conversation with Artist Talya Lubinsky
DESCRIPTION:Talya Lubinsky is an artist based in Johannesburg\, South Africa. Her practice is invested in the poetic potentials to be found in archives of violent histories. She uses both the content and materiality of these archives as generative grounds for artistic production. In September 2016\, she produced the inaugural exhibition for the new Wits Anthropology Museum\, titled If we burn\, there is ash. For this she used ash and cement as materials to investigate the potential aftermaths of fire and burning in relation to collections of material culture. In Floating Bodies\, her current exhibition at Iwalewahaus in Bayreuth\, she took as a starting point the natural power of a flood to unearth long-buried bodies and reflect on human imperatives to create barriers\, borders and walls as protection from the deluge. In June 2017\, she conducts research at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien for a future project concerned with the archive of journalist Ruth Weiss. The lunch talk\, moderated by historian Melanie Boehi\, focuses on Talya Lubinsky’s past and ongoing work on the poetic potential of archives. \nView event poster

DESCRIPTION:The book launch of Vilho Shigwedha’s book The Aftermath of the Cassinga Massacre. Survivors\, Deniers and Injustices will take place at the National Archives of Namibia (Eugene Marais Street\, Private Bag 13250\, Windhoek) on 9th May 2017 at 5pm. The author will be there and Ellen Namhila\, who wrote the foreword and is one of the Cassinga survivors\, will deliver the keynote speech. \nVilho Amukwaya Shigwedha obtained his PhD from the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town for this study. SUMMARY:Die Vermessung des Hungers: Plädoyer für eine historische Anthropologie der Globalisierung
DESCRIPTION:Vortrag von Joël Glasman im Rahmen des Forschungskolloquiums “African History” des Departments Geschichte der Universität Basel. Der Abend wird von den Basler Afrika Bibliographien organisiert. \n\nWeltweit leiden 20 Millionen Kinder an schwerer akuter Unterernährung\, schätzen die Nahrungsexperten der Unicef. Sie fügen sofort hinzu: Unterernährung ist ein lokales und kontextabhängiges Phänomen. Es gibt kaum Pathologien die sich schwerer vergleichen lassen als Unterernährung. Hunger nimmt – auf Grund von genetischen Veranlagungen\, Essgewohnheiten und Lebensweisen – so unterschiedliche Formen an\, dass ein untrainiertes Auge kaum zwischen dem pathologischen und dem normalen Fall unterscheiden kann. Wie soll Hunger dann „global“ erfasst und bekämpft werden? Nahrungsexperten entwerfen Techniken\, die Unterernährung vergleichbar und quantifizierbar machen. \nDas MUAC–Bändchen (die Abkürzung steht für ‚Mid-Upper Arm Circumference‘) ist eines der meist benutzten Gegenstände der humanitären Hilfe. Es ist ein ca. 35 cm langer Plastikstreifen\, der um den Oberarm eines Kindes gewickelt wird\, und durch einen Farbcode den Ernährungszustand andeutet: Grün für normal\, gelb für akute Unterernährung und rot für schwere akute Unterernährung. Das Bändchen wird von allen großen Hilfsorganisationen wie Unicef\, Aktion gegen den Hunger oder Ärzte Ohne Grenzen eingesetzt. \nDer Vortrag folgt den Spuren der Tropenärzte\, die seit den 1960er Jahren am MUAC arbeiten. Dabei wird eine Form der Globalgeschichte auf den Prüfstand gesetzt\, die das Globale nicht voraussetzt\, sondern mikroskopisch rekonstruieren will. Die Geschichte des MUAC-Bändchens gibt den Anlass\, über die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen einer historischen Anthropologie der Globalisierung zu diskutieren. \nJoël Glasman ist Historiker an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Im DFG-Projekt „Die Erfindung des Flüchtlingslagers“ untersucht er die Geschichte des Expertenwissens über Flüchtlinge. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rita Kesseling (Institute of Social Anthropology\, University of Basel) is launching her new book “Bodies of Truth: Law\, Memory and Emancipation in Post-Apartheid Society”. The event is organised jointly by the University of Basel (Centre for African Studies and  Institute of Social Anthropology)\, KEESA and Basler Afrika Bibliographien.\n\n\nIn 2002\, victims of apartheid-era violence filed suit against multinational corporations\, accusing them of aiding the security forces of the apartheid regime. While the litigation made its way through U.S. courts\, thousands of victims of human rights violations have had to cope with painful memories. The book offers an intimate account of how apartheid victims deal with the long-term effects of violence\, focusing on the intertwined themes of embodiment\, injury\, victimhood\, and memory. It shows victims’ attempts to emancipate from their experiences by participating in legal actions and creating new forms of sociality among themselves. \nRita Kesselring. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a lunchtalk with Niren Tolsi on journalistic practice and archives\, moderated by Melanie Boehi. We will provide juice\, mineral water\, tea & coffee. Please bring your own sandwich. \nNiren Tolsi is a South African freelance journalist and co-founding editor of The Con\, an online literary and long-form publication produced in Johannesburg. His areas of interest include citizen mobilistation and protest\, state violence\, constitutional law\, social justice\, arts and football. His work has been published by various South African and international media\, among them Mail & Guardian\, Sunday Times\, Chimurenga Chronic\, The Guardian\, The New York Times and Al Jazeera. He won the prestigious Arts Journalist of the Year 2016 award and is currently in Switzerland for a writing residency with Pro Helvetia and Reportagen. He has been working on a longterm “slow journalism” project with photographer Paul Botes which follows the aftermath of the 2012 Marikana massacre in South Africa. \nThe lunchtalk is part of a series of Journalism Archive Sessions within the course “Journalism\, gender and archive: revisiting the Ruth Weiss collection on southern Africa during the decolonisation and liberation era (ca. 1960s-1980s)” at the Department of History of the University of Basel. The event is co-hosted by the Centre for African Studies Basel and the Basler Afrika Bibliographien.

DESCRIPTION:Ausstellung “White Lady – Black Lady. Fotografie im Alltag afrikanischer Felsbildforschung” \n\nGerne machen wir Sie auf unsere Ausstellung „White Lady – Black Lady. Fotografie im Alltag afrikanischer Felsbildforschung“ aufmerksam. \nDie Ausstellung mit Fotografien von Anneliese und Ernst Rudolf Scherz zu den Expeditionen mit Abbé Henri Breuil und Mary Boyle in Namibia (1947–1950) wird vom 22. Juni bis und mit 22. Juli 2016 gezeigt.\n \nDie sogenannte „White Lady“ in einer Grotte im Brandberg/Daureb im westlichen Namibia zählt zu den eindrücklichsten Figuren der reichen Felsbildlandschaft im südlichen Afrika. Die Expeditionen des Prähistorikers Abbé Henri Breuil und seiner Mitarbeiterin Mary Boyle zwischen 1947 und 1950 begründeten ihren internationalen Ruhm. Das Archiv der Expeditionsfotografen Anneliese und Ernst Rudolf Scherz bietet unverhoffte Einblicke in die Zeit\, in der die „White Lady“ und viele andere Felsbilder von der Wissenschaft entdeckt und mit der Kamera sichtbar gemacht wurde. Die in der Ausstellung gezeigten Fotografien thematisieren die Herausforderungen des Forschungsalltags\, dokumentieren Techniken\, deuten Kontroversen zur Interpretation der Felsbilder an und konfrontieren Betrachter mit den kolonialen Kontexten von Expeditionen und Fotografie. Die Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografien erzählen von der Begeisterung\, die Landschaft\, Felsbilder und Forschungsalltag auslösten. Die geradezu spürbare Suche der Forscher nach „Nähe“ zu den Felsbildern führt zu überraschenden Nachstellungen und visuellen Verwandlungen. So entsteht auch die sogenannte „Black Lady“\, ein als Scherenschnitt stilisiertes Profil Mary Boyles\, fotografiert von Anneliese Scherz – ein markantes visuelles Echo auf die „White Lady“. \nDie wenigsten Fotografien aus dem Archiv von Anneliese und Ernst Rudolf Scherz in den Basler Afrika Bibliographien sind bislang öffentlich gezeigt. Sie werden in den Basler Afrika Bibliographien in einer klassisch konzipierten Fotografie-Ausstellung\, die bewusst das Archiv verlässt\, gezeigt. \nDie Ausstellung entstand in Zusa mmenarbeit mit der Fotografin Sonja Maria Schobinger sowie einer studentischen Arbeitsgruppe im Rahmen eines Lehrauftrags am Departement Geschichte der Universität Basel. \nDownloads: \n\nFlyer\nAusstellungstexte

SUMMARY:Mozambique in Motion 5/5: „The Murmuring Coast“
DESCRIPTION:Ein Film von Margarida Cardoso\, Portugal\, 90 Min.\, pt/e. Mit Beatriz Batarda\, Filipe Duarte u.a. Fünfter Filmabend der diesjährigen Filmreihe. \nDie Basler Afrika Bibliographien präsentieren 2015 an fünf Abenden zehn Filme aus und zu Mosambik. Der fünfte und letzte Filmabend ist dem Spielfilm „The Murmuring Coast“ (A Costa dos Murmurios) der Regisseurin Margarida Cardoso aus dem Jahr 2004 gewidmet. \nSpaziergänge in die Vergangenheit \nMaputo\, Ende der 60er Jahre. Die Portugiesin Evita findet sich zur Hochzeit mit Luis in einem vom Kolonialkrieg verwüsteten Land wieder. Als Luis auf militärische Mission zieht\, findet Evita auf einsamen Stadtspaziergängen die Konturen eines von Rassismus\, Gewalt und Ungerechtigkeit gezeichneten Landes\, das auch ihren Mann geprägt hat.\n \nMozambique in Motion \nMit der Reihe „in motion“ präsentieren die Basler Afrika Bibliographien regelmässig Filme aus ihren öffentlichen Sammlungsbeständen und zu ihrer Fokusregion südliches Afrika. Nach der letztjährigen Reihe zu Namibia stehen 2015 Spiel-\, Dokumentar- und Kurzfilme aus und zu Mosambik auf dem Programm. Sie verdeutlichen auf unterschiedliche Weise bedeutende Aspekte der gesellschaftlichen Geschlechterrollen und der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Kontraste\, die das Land prägen. \nKooperationspartner \nFür die Filmreihe „mozambique in motion“ arbeiten die Basler Afrika Bibliographien mit einem der wichtigsten Schweizer Programmkinos\, dem Stadtkino Basel zusammen. \nVorverkauf \nTageskarten zu CHF 17.– sind an der Abendkasse erhältlich; die verschiedenen Mitgliedschaften beim Stadtkino gewähren entsprechende Vergünstigungen.
