SUMMARY:Lunch Talk: Restitution: a recent phenomenon?  Colonial human remains violations\, traditions of protest and histories of restitution claims in late 19th century Namibia
DESCRIPTION:This lunch talk with Dag Henrichsen is part of the African History Research Seminar. \nCurrent demands by Namibian families and communities for restitution of so-called ethnographic objects or human remains in European collections are rooted in much longer traditions of claims for restitution than is generally anticipated. In this paper I discuss pre- and early colonial claims and show how these emerged out of a critique of colonial scientific practices and at the same time were\, at times at least\, embedded in contemporary (local/regional) political conflicts. The recent restitution debate in Namibia and elsewhere continues to be informed by such early critique as well as these legacies of past political conflicts. \n\nDownload Flyer

DESCRIPTION:2 Short Films and Lunch Talk with Namibian Film Maker Joel Haikali. \nOur guest is one of the most distinguished film makers from Namibia\, Joel Haikali. During the lunch talk with him\, two of his recent short films will be presented: “Move” and “Differences”. \n“Move” is a short film about three people\, who are living in Namibia and are connected by migration. In the short documentary they critically reflect on their experiences as migrants\, reasons for migration\, prejudices and global power relations. \nThe short movie “Differences” tells the story of three meticulous Windhoek office workers. The idyllic lives of the three men – one black\, one coloured\, one white – is disturbed when they suddenly wake up next to each other’s wives one morning. \nJoel Haikali\, the founder of Joe Vision Production\, is an award-winning director\, writer\, producer\, and actor from Namibia. He is also a television lecturer and the former Chairperson of the Filmmakers Association of Namibia (FAN). DESCRIPTION:Nigel Penn is Professor at the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Cape Town. His books “Rogues\, Rebels and Runaways” and “Murderers\, Miscreants and Mutineers” on Cape Colony characters of the 18th and 19th century have attracted a wide readership and received much praise beyond the academic frame. In conversation with Tanja Hammel (University of Zurich) who recently completed her PhD about the scientist Mary Elizabeth Barber in the Cape Colony\, and Dag Henrichsen (BAB) we reflect about topics and issues which go beyond a particular murder and murderer and include questions with regard to historical biographical writing and a wider readership (in southern Africa).

DESCRIPTION:Sambias Deviseneinkommen hängt zu 80 Prozent von Kupfer ab\, welches von grossen internationalen Konzernen wie First Quantum Minerals oder Glencore abgebaut wird. Während Sambia in einer sich zuspitzenden Schuldenkrise steckt\, ist das Geschäft mit Kupfer für die an der Wertschöpfungskette beteiligten Firmen sehr profitabel. Das sambische Steuerregime begünstigt die grossen Firmen im Kupfergeschäft\, die kaum Steuer zahlen und wenige Auflagen\, zum Beispiel im Bereich Umwelt\, erfüllen müssen. So profitiert Sambia kaum von seinem Rohstoffreichtum\, muss aber über Kreditaufnahmen weitgehend die Kosten für die grossen Infrastrukturprojekte tragen. Minenstädte sehen sich mit schwerwiegenden Umwelt- und Gesundheitsproblemen\, prekären Arbeitsbedingungen sowie sozialen Herausforderungen konfrontiert. \nDie Tagung geht der Frage nach\, welche Rolle Schweizer Firmen in der Wertschöpfungskette des Kupfers auf dem Weg von Sambia nach China spielen. Sie stützt sich dabei auf Ergebnisse des interdisziplinären\, internationalen Forschungsprojekts Valueworks\, an dem die KEESA als NGO-Partnerin beteiligt ist. Profite lassen sich nicht nur mit der Kupfergewinnung machen\, sondern auch mit Transport\, Lagerung\, Logistik\, Zertifizierung und Handel. Diese Geschäftspraktiken sind allgemein weniger sichtbar als der Bergbau selbst und entziehen sich der genauen Untersuchung. Die Schweiz hat sich in den letzten fünfzehn Jahren zum global grössten Rohstoffhandelszentrum entwickelt. Neben den bekannten Handels- oder Bergbaufirmen wie Glencore und Trafigura schliesst dies Firmen wie MSC und SGS ein. Diese in der Schweiz ansässigen Firmen sind globale Player und direkte Profiteure des Kupfergeschäfts. Nach einführenden Referaten zur Wertschöpfungskette und zur Situation in Sambia wird sich die Tagung mit der Frage der Unternehmensverantwortung beschäftigen. Wie muss der Kupferhandel in der Schweiz reguliert werden\, damit Sambia nicht nur die Kosten trägt\, sondern auch Gewinne verzeichnen kann? An dieser Diskussion nehmen VertreterInnen von sambischen Organisationen\, Forschende von Valueworks und AkteurInnen aus der Schweiz teil. \nTagungssprache ist Englisch (ohne Übersetzung). SUMMARY:in motion & Visual History Lab 2018: "In & Out of Propaganda"
DESCRIPTION:After a long and bitter struggle in the 1970s and 1980s the people of Mozambique\, Angola\, Zimbabwe\, Namibia and eventually South Africa achieved national independence\, self-determination and democracy. The struggle was violent\, however guns were not the only weapons used in the struggle for liberation in the subcontinent. Propaganda and counter-propaganda played an important role in mobilizing support and denouncing opponents. In particular\, posters and films were powerful visual media used by all sides of the struggle.  Being relatively easy to produce and distribute\, posters resulted in a merger of artistic expression and political mobilization. \nThe Visual History Lab gives students at the University of Basel the opportunity to work extensively with visual material such as posters\, film and photographs provided by the film and poster collection of the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. The aim is to creatively contextualize and rethink the material from today’s perspective. To the public\, the Visual History Lab 2018 offers film screenings\, changing exhibitions and discussions during three public events: \n\n22. November: Exile – moderation Winnie Kanyimba\n23. November: War –  special guest Simon Bright\n24. November: Art – special guest Lionel Davis\n\nSimon Bright\, born in 1952\, is a Zimbabwean/South African director/producer. He formed Zimmedia in 1985 with Ingrid Sinclair. They made films celebrating the resistance of the Frontline States to Apartheid. These films showed internationally from East German to the US. Simon was one of the Zimbabwean producers who founded the First Frontline Film Festival\, later The Southern African Film Festival. He sees making film as a way of exploring the buried dimensions of history\, culture and politics. \nLionel Davis\, born in 1936\, is a South African visual artist\, teacher\, and public intellectual. His political activities led to his imprisonment by the apartheid state in 1964 and Davis spent seven years in Robben Island\, followed by five years of house arrest. After his release\, he became a driving force in the Community Arts Project in Cape Town. As a screen-printing instructor\, he assisted many individuals and organizations in producing powerful visual propaganda material such as posters and t-shirts that mobilised for the fight against oppression. Davis taught and inspired many people who wished to express themselves and their aspirations through art. \nIn 2014 the Basler Afrika Bibliographien launched the “in motion” film project. It aims to use the medium of film to depict the cultural and ethnic diversity of southern African countries and to illustrate its economic and political complexities. \nThe Visual History Lab is a collaboration between the Centre for African Studies of the University of Basel and the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. SUMMARY:Carl Schlettwein Lecture 2018:  "The Political Aesthetics of Generators"
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture Brian Larkin examines generators as aesthetic objects\, drawing on the older idea of aisthesis as a felt experience. He examines how generators shape the technologized\, ambient environment of urban Nigeria – how it is one feels\, hears\, or smells the world one lives in – and how that environment is part of the reshaping of Nigerian urban life. Like a living being\, the generator ingests and expels. At one end of a generator\, petrol pours in. At the other\, electricity\, smoke\, fumes\, and sound flood out. In Nigeria\, generators emerged as a response to breakdowns in the electric grid but are now so broadly disseminated they have become formalized into a system of their own. Ubiquitous in all urban and rural areas\, coming in all sizes\, their sound\, smell and presence is integral to what Nigeria is and how it functions. \nBrian Larkin is the Director of Graduate Studies and a Professor of Anthropology at Barnard College\, Columbia University. He is also Co-Director of the Comparative Media Initiative at the same university and co-founder of the University Seminar on Media Theory and History. His research focuses on the ethnography and history of media in Nigeria\, the introduction of media technologies and the religious\, political\, and cultural changes they bring about. Larkin has published widely on issues of technology and breakdown\, piracy and intellectual property\, the global circulation of cultural forms\, infrastructure and urban space\, sound studies\, and Nigerian film. He is the author of Signal and Noise: Media Infrastructure and Urban Culture in Nigeria (Duke University Press\, 2008) and\, with Lila Abu-Lughod and Faye Ginsburg\, co-editor of Media Worlds: Anthropology on New Terrain (University of California Press\, 2002). \nThe Carl Schlettwein Lecture is held annually on invitation by the Centre for African Studies Basel (CASB) to honour Carl Schlettwein’s contribution to the development of African Studies in Basel.\nThis lecture will be published by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien Publishing House in their Carl Schlettwein Lecture Series. \nDownload Flyer

DESCRIPTION:The Namibian-born writer Isa Konrad\, who lives in Solothurn and Törbel (Canton Valais)\, will read from her latest crime novel Moord op Karibib (Murder in Karibib) and reflect on current developments in Afrikaans literature and language. Her previous novels include Diva\, a thriller about a South African opera singer who is drawn into the murky world lurking behind Zurich’s music scene. \nWith Stephan Meyer (University of Basel) and Dag Henrichsen (Basler Afrika Bibliographien) as conveners\, the reading will be in Afrikaans (with English translations). The ensuing conversation and discussion will welcome contributions in Afrikaans\, English and German\, in order for non-Afrikaans speakers to participate.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Brian Raftopoulos is a Zimbabwean scholar and activist. Formally Professor of Development Studies at the University of Zimbabwe\, he moved to Cape Town in 2006 and is currently the Director of Research and Advocacy in the Solidarity Peace Trust/Ukuthula Trust\, an NGO dealing with human rights issues in Zimbabwe. He is also a Research Associate at the International Studies Group\, University of the Free State. He has published widely on Zimbabwean history\, labour history\, historiography\, politics\, and economic issues. DESCRIPTION:Hier gehts zur Ausstellung.\n  \nDie zweisprachige Online-Ausstellung zur südafrikanischen Musikgeschichte entstand im Rahmen einer Übung\, die für das Departement Geschichte (Universität Basel) realisiert wurde. 10 Studenten erforschten spezifische südafrikanische Musikgenres und untersuchten diese in engem Zusammenhang mit der politischen Geschichte des Landes. In der Ausstellung finden sich Musikbeispiele zu den jeweiligen Genres\, die auch Teil der Ton-Sammlung der Bibliothek sind. Entdecken Sie ein Jahrhundert voller verschiedener Musikrichtungen wie Marabi\, Jazz\, Vaudeville\, Mbaqanga\, Hip-Hop und Kwaito. Darüber hinaus informiert die Ausstellung über den von der UNO beschlossenen kulturellen Boykott zur Schwächung des Apartheid-Regimes und was dieser wiederum für südafrikanische Musiker im Land selbst und im Exil bedeutete. \n  \nDie Online-Ausstellung wird auf Deutsch und Englisch gezeigt.

DESCRIPTION:Lunch Talk with Saara Ilovu (Usakos Museum Advisory Committee\, Namibia). \nUsakos is\, in a way\, like many towns in Southern Africa\, small and with high levels of poverty and unemployment. But Usakos is also unique. Its residents have unique stories to tell and the ruins\, rusting metalwork and fading signs reflect a unique history as the railway hub of Namibia. In this talk Saara Ilovu\, the Local Economic Development Officer & Cooperation Communication with the Karibib Town Council and Secretary of the Usakos Museum Advisory Committee\, introduces the recently launched Usakos Town Museum project. The Musum project is in part linked to the exhibition and research project “Usakos. Photography beyond ruins” between students and researchers of the Universität Basel and the University of Namibia.
