SUMMARY:Photography & Impunity
DESCRIPTION:The presentation by Kylie Thomas (University College Cork) is part of the Namibian and Southern African Studies Research Colloquium by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, the Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel\, and the University of Namibia. \n  \nKylie Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the Radical Humanities Laboratory\, University College Cork\, Ireland\, and also Guest Researcher at NIOD Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies\, the Netherlands\, where she co-directs the NIOD ImageLab\, a project on war and visual culture. She is the author of numeours books and essays\, amongst them “Women and Photography in Africa: Creative Practices and Feminist Challenges” (2020). In her presentation she focuses on the photographic representation of two key events in the history of South Africa – the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 and the Marikana Massacre of 2012. To see these two massacres in relation is to see how impunity casts a dark shadow over the present\, and how the failure to hold perpetrators to account for the crime of humanity that was apartheid is bound to the persistence of racial capitalism and the forms of violence it produces and upon which it depends. \n  \nThis is a hybrid event. SUMMARY:The Human Infrastructure of the Namibian War: Origins of the «Namibian Labor Corridors» in War and Genocide\, 1904–1908
DESCRIPTION:This presentation by William Lyon (Universität Zürich) is part of the African History Colloquium Research Seminar. \n  \nThe presentation\, jointly orgniased by the African History Research Seminar of the Department of History (University of Basel) and the BAB\, focuses on how the German colonial war in Namibia (1904–1908) relied on forced local labor and migrant workers to power the military’s logistics and infrastructure\, a “human infrastructure” critical to waging war. The genocide simultaneously destroyed local labor populations while fueling recruitment of migrants from West Africa\, South Africa\, and elsewhere\, laying the groundwork for Namibia’s mining-led economy. William Lyon has recently published the monograph «Forged in Genocide» (2024) and is currently a Postdoc at the University of Zurich and is interested in the history of capitalism\, consumerism and labor in Southern and West Africa. \n  \nDownload programme

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Building Turst\, Situating Repair: An Ecology of Action in a South African Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:The Basler Afrika Bibliographien and Dr. James Merron invite you to a Book Launch and Conversation with Prof. Elísio Macamo (University of Basel) on Building Trust\, Situating Repair: An Ecology of Action in a South African Nature Reserve. \n  \n“By understanding trust in terms of repair we will be able to better understand the historical and material forces that structure a particular situation.” \n  \nThe hybrid event opens up a conversation about the role of concepts\, theories\, and methods in building research objects. \n  \nOn the Book\nNature conservation is often framed as an ecological problem in need of repair. With both material and discursive dimensions\, repairing things involves repairing people’s orientation to those things. As such\, nature conservation can be understood as a negotiation between different orientations to ecological problems. This publication seeks to understand the negotiation through trust\, the analysis of which situates repair in a particular setting. Empirically\, the book is structured around an encounter that unfolded over the course of a single day between white\ncommercial farmers and experts belonging to various government departments\, universities and an NGO working in a South African nature reserve. By moving through the situation sequence-by-sequence the author captures the relationship between trust and repair vis-à-vis the material forces that structured the situation\, and the discursive methods that actors used to repair a degraded ecology. \n  \nZoom link registration for the discussion: kindly write to Dag Henrichsen dh@baslerafrika.ch \n  \nFollowed by a Happy Hour of “Vinyl Listening—Namibian tracks” presented by Raffaele Perniola Roulet (MA\, University of Basel).

SUMMARY:Pasts and Presents of Student Protests: Comparing Southern Africa and Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:Howie Rechavia-Taylor’s lecture is cancelled due to sickness. Instead\, the colloquium will talk about “Pasts and Presents of Student Protests: Comparing Southern Africa and Switzerland”. \nSince October 2023\, students around the world have occupied university campuses in protest against the war in Gaza\, military escalation\, and gross human rights violations in Gaza\, the West Bank and Israel. In our colloquium we place these protests and the responses to them within the university\, in the media and across various public spheres (politics\, international courts\, international organisations) in critical comparison with Southern African histories of student protests throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We will discuss examples that include anti-apartheid struggles\, the significance of Palestine for Africa focused solidarity groups\, the Rhodes Must Fall and Fees Must Fall student movements\, and student protests at the University of Basel and other Swiss universities. \n  \nThis is a hybrid event. SUMMARY:Book Launch: “Beggars on our own land...” Tsumib v Government of the Republic of Namibia and its Implications for Ancestral Land Claims in Namibia
DESCRIPTION:The Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, Dr Willem Odendaal and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung invite to the launch of the Basel Namibia Studies Series’ latest title: “Beggars on our own land…” Tsumib v Government of the Republic of Namibia and its Implications for Ancestral Land Claims in Namibia. \n  \nSpeaker: Dr Willem Odendaal\, author of the book \n  \nDirector of Ceremony: Mrs Rakkel Andreas \n  \nON THE BOOK\nIn 1954\, the Hai||om people were evicted from Etosha by the South African-controlled South West African Administration. In 2015\, the Hai||om filed the case of Tsumib v Government of the Republic of Namibia in the High Court of Namibia. This book unravels the historical and contemporary sociolegal complexities that led to the Tsumib case. At the core of the case lies the legal question\, how can the Hai||om people approach the Namibian Courts in order to claim compensation for the loss of their ancestral lands? Odendaal goes into detail how the Tsumib case materialised under the postindependence Namibian constitutional discourse. He assesses the Namibian land reform programme and its oversight in dealing with historical land dispossessions. He inspects Hai||om “identity” and how it was used to strengthen their case. He concludes with an examination of Namibia’s outdated and restrictive legal framework\, which ultimately denied the Hai||om people their constitutional right to be heard in the Namibian Court. \n  \nVenue: Namibia Scientific Society\, Robert Mugabe Avenue 110\, Windhoek. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Infrastructures of Migrant Labour in Colonial Ovamboland\, 1915 to 1954
DESCRIPTION:The Basler Afrika Bibliographien and Dr Lovisa Tegelela Nampala (Ohangwena) invite to the Book Launch and Round Table on Infrastructures of Migrant Labour in Colonial Ovamboland\, 1915 to 1954. \n  \nSpeakers: Dr Nampala with discussant Dr Napandulwe Shiweda and panelists Dr Martha Akawa\, Dr Mike Shirungu and Dr Michael Akuupa \n  \nMaster of Ceremony: Dr Nashilongweshipwe Mushaandja \n  \nON THE BOOK\nMost research on the migrant labour system in Namibia under South African colonial rule emphasises its dehumanising aspects. In a complete contrast\, this study highlights the social and ritual resources that contract workers and their families in colonial Ovamboland mobilised to provide forms of support and connection across great distances and absences. Based on extensive oral research\, this study peels back the layers of intangible infrastructure that sustained migrant workers through all the stages of their contract\, including observances around workplace deaths. This thesis vividly demonstrates the persistence of older practices that sustained the bonds of life\, fellowship and family under stress\, as well as adaptation to new colonial system such as the postal system. \n  \nVenue: National Library of Namibia\, Foyer\, 1–3 Eugene Marais Street\, Windhoek \n  \nDate & time: Wednesday\, 11 September 2024\, 5pm for 5.30pm\, traditional attires of their choices \n  \nRSVP: Ms Victoria Isaacks\, info@nlas.gov.na or Tel: +264 61 293 5111 \n  \nA book table\, copies for the press and refreshments will be available.\nBook Distributor: Namibia Book Market\, Tel +264 61 23 6938\, contact@namibiabooks.com \n  \nDownload programme
