DESCRIPTION:7th Namibia Research Day in Basel (Switzerland) \nSaturday 26th September \nWe would like to invite students and scholars working on Namibia to participate in the 7th Namibia Research Day. \nThe Namibia Research Day brings together graduate students and scholars of all levels and from all disciplines to share their research\, experiences and expectations. It offers the possibility to discuss ongoing or recently completed research on Namibia in an interdisciplinary context. The Day also offers the possibility for common reflections on a variety of (practical) issues with which researchers in Namibia are faced with\, such as archival and institutional opportunities and challenges or questions regarding academic cooperation. In 2020\, the Day will include online sessions with participants at the University of Namibia in Windhoek. \nThe Namibia Research Day explicitly addresses all disciplines\, themes and topics. Interested participants are requested to send a research abstract/project summary (not more than one page) and let us know if interested in giving a brief presentation. The final format and programme of the Day will be communicated at a later stage\, depending on the number of participants and the disciplines represented as well as the actual Covid-19 situation. \nThe Namibia Research Day is jointly organised by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Namibia Research Centre & Southern Africa Library) and the Centre for African Studies at University of Basel\, Switzerland\, and also\, for the first time this year\, in collaboration with the Department of Geography\, History\, Environmental Studies and Tourist Management\, University of Namibia. DESCRIPTION:This roundtable seminar with Job Amupanda\, Lesley Blaauw & Andre du Pisani (University of Namibia) is part of the Namibian and Southern African Studies Research Colloquium. \n  \nThe Namibian presidential and parliamentarian elections on 27 November 2019 seem to generate little interest amongst the electorate. Are there no issues at stake\, has the social justice and social welfare landscape improved to the benefit of many? In this seminar we join land activist and political scientist Job Amupanda\, political studies professor Lesley Blaauw and veteran political analyst Andre du Pisani\, all from the University of Namibia\, in an open discussion on the forthcoming elections. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Breweries\, Politics and Identity: The History Behind Namibian Beer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch of Tycho van der Hoog’s book “Breweries\, Politics and Identity: The History Behind Namibian Beer” at the BAB. \n  \nNamibian beer is celebrated as an inextricable part of Namibian nationalism\, both within its domestic borders and across global markets. But for decades on end\, the same brew was not available to the black population as a consequence of colonial politics. This book aims to explain how a European style beer has been transformed from an icon of white settlers into a symbol of the independent Namibian nation. The unusual focus on beer offers valuable insight into the role companies play in identity formation and thus highlights an understudied aspect of Namibian history\, namely business–state relations. \n  \nTycho van der Hoog is a researcher at the African Studies Centre Leiden\, an interfaculty institute of Leiden University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history\, a bachelor’s degree in political science\, a research master’s degree in African Studies and a master’s degree in history from Leiden University. He has conducted fieldwork in Zambia\, Zimbabwe\, Namibia and South Africa. \n  \nDownload Flyer

DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite students and scholars working on Namibia to participate in the 6th Namibia Research Day taking place on Friday 27 September 2019 in Basel (Switzerland). \nThe Namibia Research Day brings together graduate students and scholars of all levels and from all disciplines to share their research\, experiences and expectations. It offers the possibility to discuss ongoing or recently completed research on Namibia in an interdisciplinary context. The Day also offers the possibility for common reflections on a variety of (practical) issues with which researchers in Namibia are faced with\, such as archival and institutional opportunities and challenges or questions regarding academic cooperation. \nThe Namibia Research Day explicitly addresses all disciplines\, themes and topics. Interested participants are requested to send a research abstract/project summary (not more than one page) and let us know if interested in giving a brief presentation. The final format and programme of the Day will be communicated at a later stage\, depending on the number of participants and the disciplines represented. \nThe Namibia Research Day is jointly organised by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Namibia Research Centre & Southern Africa Library) and the Centre for African Studies at University of Basel\, Switzerland. DESCRIPTION:A performance by Nashilongweshipwe Mushaandja (Windhoek/Cape Town) \n“Dance of the Rubber Tree is a ritual of movement between embodied\, spatial and institutional archives. I devise an intimate and immersive queer dance imagined at a Rubber Tree but performed in a concrete archive\, the museum theatre. I play a sonic repertoire of silence\, noise\, love and struggle songs from Southern Africa as a form of resisting the systemic erasure/exclusion/othering of knowledges present on the margins and in the cracks of colonial-nationalist archives. Omudhime (Rubber Tree) is indigenously used in cleansing and memorial moments of border crossing. \nI invite to the Dance of the Rubber Tree at the doors of the Basler Afrika Bibliographien on Tuesday 10 September at 6pm. You are welcome to bring salt and candles which are gifts to share.” (Nashilongweshipwe Mushaandja) \nNashilongweshipwe Mushaandja is a performer\, educator and writer with practice and research interests in embodied and spatial archives in movement formation. Mushaandja is also a PhD artist at the Centre for Theatre\, Dance and Performance Studies at the University of Cape Town studying Queer Praxis in Oudano Archives.
