SUMMARY:Listening to History - Archives and Sound Recordings\, Curating and Repatriation
DESCRIPTION:Sound archives and acoustic collections comprise of recorded voices\, narratives\, performances and soundscapes of events and places. Their curation poses many challenges\, their usage requires ‘close listening’. \n  \nWe invite archivists\, curators and scholars for conversations and brief inputs in order to raise awareness on and promote these collections and their particular technical\, curatorial\, repatriation and translation requirements. Anette Hoffmann’s latest book Listening to Colonial History (BAB 2023) with reference to recordings of Naro speakers in the Kalahari (1908) serves as an entry point for discussions on decolonial approaches on archives and research. \n  \nThe press is invited to a Round Table and Book Launch. \nLink to programme

SUMMARY:9th Namibia Research Day
DESCRIPTION:We invite students and scholars working in and on Namibia to join us for the 9th Namibia Research Day. \nThe Namibia Research Day brings together graduate students and scholars of all levels and from all disciplines to share their research\, experiences and expectations. It offers the possibility to discuss ongoing or recently completed research on Namibia in an interdisciplinary context. The Day also offers the possibility for common reflections on a variety of (practical) issues with which researchers in Namibia are faced with\, such as archival and institutional possibilities and challenges or questions regarding academic cooperation. The Day takes place in a hybrid format; nevertheless\, we strongly encourage physical presence in Basel for participants based in Europe. \nThe Namibia Research Day explicitly addresses all disciplines\, themes and topics. Interested participants are requested to send a research abstract/project summary (not more than one page) and let us know if interested in giving a brief presentation. The final programme of the Day will be communicated in early September. \nThe Namibia Research Day is jointly organised by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Namibia Research Centre & Southern Africa Library)\, the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel\, Switzerland\, and the School of Humanities\, Society and Development of the University of Namibia. Participation is free of charge. \nPlease note that this is a hybrid event. For registration please consult the programme: \nDownload programme \n  \n

SUMMARY:Film Talk: Cinematic Work and Colonial History
DESCRIPTION:Film talk with Perivi Katjavivi (Windhoek). \nFilm making as knowledge creation is targeting the colonial archive in multiple ways. His films include Emoyeni (Netflix 2020)\, Film Festival Film (Berlinale 2019)\, The Unseen (Busan 2016). \nModeration: Dag Henrichsen\, Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, and Maria Randy Mwatondange\, Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel\, Switzerland. \nAn online event. SUMMARY:Round Table: Decolonizing Africa Collections? Library Legacies and African Studies Futures
DESCRIPTION:Round Table with Jakobina Mwiiyale (Windhoek) and Nora Schmidt (Vienna). \nAfrican Studies libraries have become sites of critical interrogations into knowledge production practices. Digital technological possibilities\, on the one hand\, and colonial legacies in acquisition\, cataloguing and knowledge validation\, on the other hand\, provide challenges to academic library practices. Student demands\, in turn\, envisage wide-ranging and simple access possibilities. In this Round Table\, Jakobina Mwiiyale\, Head of the University of Namibia Library User Services\, Nora Schmidt from the network for decolonising academic libraries in German-speaking countries reflect on the – often – hidden skills of librarian’s knowledge curation\, decolonial policy and student demands. \nJakobina Mwiiyale is Head of the University of Namibia (UNAM) Library User Services\, Windhoek. \nNor Schmidt is a library and information studies researcher\, decolonisation activist and open access advocate\, currently working for the University Press at the University of Music and Performing Arts (UDW)\, Vienna. \nModeration: Dag Henrichsen\, Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, and Maria Randy Mwatondange\, Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel\, Switzerland. \nAn online event.
