SUMMARY:Ausstellungsvernissage: Deal with it - Afrikanisches Erbe in Basel
Deal with it! \n  \nLink Rahmenprogramm: https://ub.unibas.ch/de/ausstellungen/deal-with-it/ \n  \nDownload Flyer: Deal_with_it

SUMMARY:Book Launch: God’s Feet or the Mission’s Pack Donkey. Evangelists of Namibia
DESCRIPTION:Basler Afrika Bibliographien invites to the book launch of “God’s Feet or the Mission’s Pack Donkey. Evangelists of Namibia” by Hans-Martin Milk. The event is presented by the Jane Katjavivi Archives Restoration Project. \n  \nON THE BOOK\nAfrican evangelists played a crucial but mostly overlooked role in shaping the spiritual and social networks that transformed indigenous communities in Namibia from the early nineteenth century. Drawing on a wide range of German\, Namibian and South African archival sources and supplemented with a large number of interviews and photos\, the book interweaves mission and church history between 1820 and 1990 with a biographical approach. As such\, the histories of many Namibian families\, notably those connected to the Rhenish Mission Society/ELK/ELCRN\, are brought to life. \n  \nThe author Hans-Martin Milk and historians and archivists Wolfram Hartmann and Werner Hillebrecht will introduce the book and ELCRN‘s mission and church archives project. \n  \n  \nVenue: ELCRN‘s Friedenskirche\, 6 Church Street\, parking entrance Konrad Street\, Windhoek. \nDate and time: Tuesday 4 July 2023\, 6.00 pm \nContact: 081 61 00691 \nA book table and refreshments will be available.\nBook Distributer: Namibia Book Market: Tel +264 61 23 6938; contact@namibiabooks.com \n  \nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Hans Werner Debrunner Symposium. Revisiting Histories and Cultures of African Diasporas\, Religion and Belief
DESCRIPTION:Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel (Switzerland) \n9 – 10 June 2023 \nIn cooperation with the Basler Afrika Bibliographien \n  \nThe Centre for African Studies (CAS) of the University of Basel and the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB) invite to a symposium on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Swiss historian and theologian Hans Werner Debrunner (1923-1998). \n  \nDebrunner published initially on spirituality and belief systems in Ghana as well as on Christian mission histories for both Ghana and Togo. Apart from numerous essays\, his monographs Witchcraft in Ghana: as study on the belief in destructive witches and its effect on the Akan tribes (1959) and A history of Christianity in Ghana (1967) laid foundations for later scholarship. \n  \nDebrunner’s voluminous book Presence and Prestige: Africans in Europe. A history of Africans in Europe before 1918 (1979) remains a classic in African Diaspora history studies. He also contributed to the history of Swiss colonial entanglements in Africa. \n  \nThe symposium provides an opportunity to revisit themes and topics in Debrunner’s writings and assess some of the influences which his scholarship and also his research archives and library\, housed at the BAB\, generate(d). \n  \nLimited travel funding is available. The symposium will be held at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, Klosterberg 23\, Basel\, Switzerland\, with the option to join online. \n  \nWe aim at publishing the contributions. \n  \nContact: \nVeit Arlt (CAS) \nveit.arlt@unibas.ch \n  \nDag Henrichsen (BAB) \ndh@baslerafrika.ch \n  \nDownload programme

SUMMARY:Conference: Cultural Relations between Switzerland and South Africa\, 1948-1994
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between Switzerland and South Africa has been the object of extensive research over the past two decades. However\, the focus has until now been on the role that Swiss business and politics played as enablers for the apartheid state. A research project running from 2019 to 2023 at the Hochschule der Künste Bern HKB\, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)\, has aimed instead to shed light on cultural relations between the two countries from the beginnings of apartheid in 1948 through to the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994. \n  \n  \nTo conclude this project\, the Hochschule der Künste Bern will be holding a conference from Wednesday 3 May to Friday 5 May 2023 in Basel in Switzerland\, hosted by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien in collaboration with the Centre for African Studies Basel and Africa Open Institute of the University of Stellenbosch\, and funded by the SNSF. \n  \n  \nAttendance is free; please register here. \nCoffee/tea and a light lunch on Wed/Thu are free of charge. \n  \nOn Friday 5 May\, attendees may join the speakers for the closing lunch at the Restaurant Anatolia (cost to non-speakers ca. CHF 55.– per person). \n  \nDownload programme

SUMMARY:Listening to History - Archives and Sound Recordings\, Curating and Repatriation
DESCRIPTION:Sound archives and acoustic collections comprise of recorded voices\, narratives\, performances and soundscapes of events and places. Their curation poses many challenges\, their usage requires ‘close listening’. \n  \nWe invite archivists\, curators and scholars for conversations and brief inputs in order to raise awareness on and promote these collections and their particular technical\, curatorial\, repatriation and translation requirements. Anette Hoffmann’s latest book Listening to Colonial History (BAB 2023) with reference to recordings of Naro speakers in the Kalahari (1908) serves as an entry point for discussions on decolonial approaches on archives and research. \n  \nThe press is invited to a Round Table and Book Launch. \nLink to programme

SUMMARY:9th Namibia Research Day
DESCRIPTION:We invite students and scholars working in and on Namibia to join us for the 9th Namibia Research Day. \nThe Namibia Research Day brings together graduate students and scholars of all levels and from all disciplines to share their research\, experiences and expectations. It offers the possibility to discuss ongoing or recently completed research on Namibia in an interdisciplinary context. The Day also offers the possibility for common reflections on a variety of (practical) issues with which researchers in Namibia are faced with\, such as archival and institutional possibilities and challenges or questions regarding academic cooperation. The Day takes place in a hybrid format; nevertheless\, we strongly encourage physical presence in Basel for participants based in Europe. \nThe Namibia Research Day explicitly addresses all disciplines\, themes and topics. Interested participants are requested to send a research abstract/project summary (not more than one page) and let us know if interested in giving a brief presentation. The final programme of the Day will be communicated in early September. \nThe Namibia Research Day is jointly organised by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Namibia Research Centre & Southern Africa Library)\, the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel\, Switzerland\, and the School of Humanities\, Society and Development of the University of Namibia. Participation is free of charge. \nPlease note that this is a hybrid event. For registration please consult the programme: \nDownload programme \n  \n
