SUMMARY:Blick ins Zolli-Archiv: Wildtierhaltung und Wissensproduktion
DESCRIPTION:Die Präsentation von Louanne Burkhardt findet im Rahmen der Ausstellung “Deal with it” statt. \n  \nDie Tierbeschaffung des Basler Zoos setzte bis zu Beginn der 1970er-Jahre (1973 CITES) eine gute Vernetzung mit Akteur*innen in Afrika bzw. insbesondere auch mit den entsprechenden Kolonialregierungen voraus. Immer wieder reisten auch Mitarbeitende des Basler Zoos selbst in afrikanische Länder\, um sich vor Ort um den Wildtierfang oder den Tiertransport in die Schweiz zu kümmern. In Basel angekommen\, galt es\, die bestmöglichen Haltungsbedingungen für die neu importierten Tiere zu schaffen. Das Wissen über die Haltung zahlreicher Tiere war in Europa gering und viele Erfahrungen wurden zum ersten Mal gemacht. Begleitend zum Zooalltag wurde so laufend neues Wissen produziert\, das später u.a. an andere Zoos weitergegeben werden konnte (Ernährung\, Zucht etc.). Neben der praxisorientierten Wissensproduktion war der Zoo natürlich auch jener Ort\, wo die Basler Bevölkerung vermeintlich typisch afrikanische Tiere wie Giraffen\, Löwen und Elefanten erstmals live beobachten konnte. Der Zoo prägte so das Afrikabild einer breiten Öffentlichkeit. \n  \nIm Rahmen eines Vortrags werden Auszüge aus Reiseberichten\, Fotografien und Filmausschnitte gezeigt\, welche einerseits die Beziehungen der Institution mit Afrika und den europäischen Kolonialmöchten und andererseits vor allem auch die Geschichte der Haltung afrikanischer Tiere im Zoo beleuchten. Da im Zoo Basel bisher keine wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik stattfand\, ist der Vortrag als eine erste Archiv-Sichtung zu verstehen\, welche dem Rahmenprogramm zur Ausstellung «Deal with it» eine zoologische Dimension gibt.

DESCRIPTION:We invite students and scholars working in and on Namibia to participate in the 10th Namibia Research Day. \n  \nThe Namibia Research Day brings together graduate students and scholars of all levels and from all disciplines to share their research\, experiences and expectations. It offers the possibility to discuss ongoing or recently completed research on Namibia in an interdisciplinary context. The Day also offers the possibility for common reflection on a variety of (practical) issues researchers in Namibia are faced with\, such as archival and institutional possibilities and challenges or questions regarding academic cooperation. The Day takes place in a hybrid format; nevertheless\, we strongly encourage physical presence in Basel for participants based in Europe. \n  \nThe 10th Namibia Research Day will divert from the previous Days and – apart from open panels – includes a workshop on “Namibian Studies – visions and expectations”. \n  \nThe Namibia Research Day is jointly organised by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Namibia Resource Centre & Southern Africa Library)\, the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel\, Switzerland\, and the School of Humanities\, Society and Development of the University of Namibia. SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Conjunctions of Archives and Public Spheres:  Embodied Histories\, Memory and Multi-Media Archives in and from Africa
DESCRIPTION:Embodied histories have found their way into western (colonial) archives as fragments\, usually by means of audio-visual media of all sorts (acoustic\, image and film documents). The proposed conference takes Africa-related multi-media archives (and not only audio-visual collections) as focus in order to explore two main trajectories: \n  \n–  the con- and disjunctions within multi-media archives and collections\, with reference to ‘documenting’ (performative) histories and memory\, in particular; and \n  \n–  the con- and disjunctions of such archives and collections in relation to historical as well current public spheres\, and not only in their countries of origin(s). \n  \nBoth trajectories raise principal questions with regard to\, on the one hand\, epistemologies of multi-media archives and curatorial interventions\, and\, one the other hand\, with reference to audiences\, visibility and dissemination. \n  \nMulti-media archives have of late generated innovative curatorial and scholarly work. Principally transdisciplinary in outlook\, such work commonly reflects collective initiatives by curators/archivists\, scholars and artists. Amongst other\, these initiatives (re-) situate and (re-)create (new) approaches\, aesthetics and understanding. They generate interventions of all sorts and not only in their countries of origin(s) and emphasise\, implicitly or explicitly\, relational knowledge productions.  Importantly\, they raise questions relating to audiences (broader or specific) as engaged in\, affected by or (dis-) connected from archives and collections\, histories and narratives\, with questions pertaining to restitution and repatriation tied in. \n  \nThe conference in Basel\, organised as a hybrid event\, aims at bringing archivists\, curators\, scholars\, artists and a broader academic audience into conversation. It will be followed by the Annual General Assembly of the Swiss Society for African Studies and\, on 21 October\, the annual\, 10th Namibia Research Day. \n  \nWe encourage emerging scholars and curators\, scholars and artists from African countries\, in particular\, to respond to the Call for Papers. Multi-media presentations with possibilities of shared listening\, viewing and discussion of ´archival fragments´ are encouraged. DESCRIPTION:Perspektiven auf den Umgang mit afrikanischem Kulturgut in Basler Sammlungs- und Forschungsinstitutionen \n  \nWarum findet sich ausgerechnet in Basel eine derartige Häufung an Institutionen mit Bezug zum afrikanischen Kontinent? \n  \nDie Entwicklung basiert auf einer längeren Tradition des akademischen Engagements mit Afrika in der Region. Mit dem klaren Bekenntnis der Universität zur Forschung über\, in\, mit und für Afrika hat sich Basel zu einem internationalen Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Afrikaforschung entwickelt. \n  \nDie Ausstellung stellt die individuelle und gemeinsame Geschichte und Gegenwart von fünf Basler Institutionen aus der Perspektive von Studierenden vor: die Universität Basel\, das Schweizerische Tropen- und Public Health-Institut\, das Museum der Kulturen Basel\, die Mission 21 und die Basler Afrika Bibliographien. Die Institutionen sowie die Ausstellungsbesucher:innen sind eingeladen\, sich mit ihren Sichtweisen auseinanderzusetzen. Deal with it! Ein Raum für Diskurs entsteht. \n  \nRund um die Ausstellung\nPARC – Portal for African Research Collections \n  \nPARC (Portal for African Research Collections) ist der neue Metakatalog für alle Africana-Sammlungen am Forschungsstandort Basel. Erstmals werden die Sammlungen der fünf Basler Institutionen Universität Basel\, Swiss TPH\, Mission 21\, Basler Afrika Bibliographien und Museum der Kulturen Basel in einem einzigen Katalog durchsuchbar. Dies erleichtert den Zugang zu den Sammlungen  für lokale und internationale Studierende\,Forschende und Interessierte. \n  \nWeil besonders der technische Zugang für Nutzergruppen in Afrika sich teilweise schwierig gestaltet\, orientiert sich PARC an den Ansprüchen und Herausforderungen des afrikanischen Marktes. Nur so kann ein Beitrag zur besseren Sichtbarkeit des Afrikanischen Kulturerbes in Basel für alle Forschenden gewährleistet werden. \n  \nDie Aufnahme weiterer Sammlungen in der Schweiz\, aber insbesondere auch in Afrika werden in Zukunft verstärkt angestrebt. \n  \nRahmenprogramm \n  \nDas Basler Afrika Netzwerk beschränkt sich nicht auf die in der Ausstellung porträtierten Sammlungs- und Forschungsinstitutionen. Diverse Unternehmen\, Kollektive\, Organisationen und Einzelpersonen bringen heute die Aufklärung und Überwindung der kolonialen Geschichte der Stadt voran. Sie tragen  Themen wie die Afrikaforschung\, Antirassismus\, Afrodiaspora\, Dekolonialisierung\, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit\, Restitution und Reparation\, Wissenstransfer\, Kunst und Kultur und viele weitere in die Öffentlichkeit und fördern damit das bessere Zusammenleben in unserer Gesellschaft. Aus diesem Grund hat das Ausstellungsteam via Open-Call das Projekt für ein Rahmenprogramm geöffnet. DESCRIPTION:Basler Afrika Bibliographien invites to the book launch of “God’s Feet or the Mission’s Pack Donkey. Evangelists of Namibia” by Hans-Martin Milk. The event is presented by the Jane Katjavivi Archives Restoration Project. \n  \nON THE BOOK\nAfrican evangelists played a crucial but mostly overlooked role in shaping the spiritual and social networks that transformed indigenous communities in Namibia from the early nineteenth century. Drawing on a wide range of German\, Namibian and South African archival sources and supplemented with a large number of interviews and photos\, the book interweaves mission and church history between 1820 and 1990 with a biographical approach. DESCRIPTION:Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel (Switzerland) \n9 – 10 June 2023 \nIn cooperation with the Basler Afrika Bibliographien \n  \nThe Centre for African Studies (CAS) of the University of Basel and the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB) invite to a symposium on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Swiss historian and theologian Hans Werner Debrunner (1923-1998). \n  \nDebrunner published initially on spirituality and belief systems in Ghana as well as on Christian mission histories for both Ghana and Togo. Apart from numerous essays\, his monographs Witchcraft in Ghana: as study on the belief in destructive witches and its effect on the Akan tribes (1959) and A history of Christianity in Ghana (1967) laid foundations for later scholarship. \n  \nDebrunner’s voluminous book Presence and Prestige: Africans in Europe. A history of Africans in Europe before 1918 (1979) remains a classic in African Diaspora history studies. He also contributed to the history of Swiss colonial entanglements in Africa. \n  \nThe symposium provides an opportunity to revisit themes and topics in Debrunner’s writings and assess some of the influences which his scholarship and also his research archives and library\, housed at the BAB\, generate(d). \n  \nLimited travel funding is available.
