DESCRIPTION:The Basler Afrika Bibliographien and Dr. James Merron invite you to a Book Launch and Conversation with Prof. Elísio Macamo (University of Basel) on Building Trust\, Situating Repair: An Ecology of Action in a South African Nature Reserve. \n  \n“By understanding trust in terms of repair we will be able to better understand the historical and material forces that structure a particular situation.” \n  \nThe hybrid event opens up a conversation about the role of concepts\, theories\, and methods in building research objects. \n  \nOn the Book\nNature conservation is often framed as an ecological problem in need of repair. With both material and discursive dimensions\, repairing things involves repairing people’s orientation to those things. As such\, nature conservation can be understood as a negotiation between different orientations to ecological problems. This publication seeks to understand the negotiation through trust\, the analysis of which situates repair in a particular setting. Empirically\, the book is structured around an encounter that unfolded over the course of a single day between white\ncommercial farmers and experts belonging to various government departments\, universities and an NGO working in a South African nature reserve. SUMMARY:Pasts and Presents of Student Protests: Comparing Southern Africa and Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:Howie Rechavia-Taylor’s lecture is cancelled due to sickness. Instead\, the colloquium will talk about “Pasts and Presents of Student Protests: Comparing Southern Africa and Switzerland”. \nSince October 2023\, students around the world have occupied university campuses in protest against the war in Gaza\, military escalation\, and gross human rights violations in Gaza\, the West Bank and Israel. In our colloquium we place these protests and the responses to them within the university\, in the media and across various public spheres (politics\, international courts\, international organisations) in critical comparison with Southern African histories of student protests throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We will discuss examples that include anti-apartheid struggles\, the significance of Palestine for Africa focused solidarity groups\, the Rhodes Must Fall and Fees Must Fall student movements\, and student protests at the University of Basel and other Swiss universities. \n  \nThis is a hybrid event. DESCRIPTION:The Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, Dr Willem Odendaal and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung invite to the launch of the Basel Namibia Studies Series’ latest title: “Beggars on our own land…” Tsumib v Government of the Republic of Namibia and its Implications for Ancestral Land Claims in Namibia. \n  \nSpeaker: Dr Willem Odendaal\, author of the book \n  \nDirector of Ceremony: Mrs Rakkel Andreas \n  \nON THE BOOK\nIn 1954\, the Hai||om people were evicted from Etosha by the South African-controlled South West African Administration. In 2015\, the Hai||om filed the case of Tsumib v Government of the Republic of Namibia in the High Court of Namibia. This book unravels the historical and contemporary sociolegal complexities that led to the Tsumib case. At the core of the case lies the legal question\, how can the Hai||om people approach the Namibian Courts in order to claim compensation for the loss of their ancestral lands? Odendaal goes into detail how the Tsumib case materialised under the postindependence Namibian constitutional discourse. He assesses the Namibian land reform programme and its oversight in dealing with historical land dispossessions. He inspects Hai||om “identity” and how it was used to strengthen their case. DESCRIPTION:The Basler Afrika Bibliographien and Dr Lovisa Tegelela Nampala (Ohangwena) invite to the Book Launch and Round Table on Infrastructures of Migrant Labour in Colonial Ovamboland\, 1915 to 1954. \n  \nSpeakers: Dr Nampala with discussant Dr Napandulwe Shiweda and panelists Dr Martha Akawa\, Dr Mike Shirungu and Dr Michael Akuupa \n  \nMaster of Ceremony: Dr Nashilongweshipwe Mushaandja \n  \nON THE BOOK\nMost research on the migrant labour system in Namibia under South African colonial rule emphasises its dehumanising aspects. In a complete contrast\, this study highlights the social and ritual resources that contract workers and their families in colonial Ovamboland mobilised to provide forms of support and connection across great distances and absences. Based on extensive oral research\, this study peels back the layers of intangible infrastructure that sustained migrant workers through all the stages of their contract\, including observances around workplace deaths. However\, many women are intimidated by violence perpetrated by men. The book “Transition Towards Gender Equality” by Sonja Gierse-Arsten is based on a social anthropological field research in the small town of Outjo. Gender is learnt\, lived and reproduced in a societal frame. Violence against women\, too\, is perpetrated by men in a societal context. SUMMARY:Exciting Lecture: Invisibility\, Hyper-visibility\, Erasure\, and Elsewhereness: Working with Black Women’s Life-Stories
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of the Biennial CRG African History Conference 2024. \n  \nUsing Noni Jabavu (1919–2008) as a starting point for the lecture\, Athambile Masola will consider the ways in which biographical writing is central to responding to the complex ways in which black women’s histories in particular are rendered. Despite her hypervisible writing career\, a transnational experience\, her story is about invisibility\, hypervisibility\, erasure and elsewhereness. The lecture will explore the archival and\nmethodological challenges of writing histories in this context. \n  \nAthambile Masola is a writer\, researcher and an award-winning poet based at the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town. Her debut collection of poetry\, Ilifa (Uhlanga Press\, 2021)\, is written in isiXhosa. She is the co-author of the children’s history book series\, Imbokodo: Women Who Shape Us (Jacana Media\, 2022)\, with Dr Xolisa Guzula. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to the 6th Biannual AEGIS CRG African History Conference hosted in collaboration with the Department of History at the University of Basel and the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. \n  \nThe conference is free of charge. The conference hosts will offer refreshments during the breaks and a dinner on 20 June. Participants are required to arrange and pay for their own travels and accommodation. We have made a preliminary reservation for a number of rooms at Hotel IBIS Budget\, close to the train station Basel SBB. Dankwa (Institute of Social Anthropology\, University of Basel) and Dag Henrichsen (BAB & Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel) \n  \nThe one-day hybrid workshop\, facilitated by the scholar and writer Anima Adjepong\, Associate Professor of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies\, University of Cincinnati\, invites us into a practice of queer:ing and strategically interrupting our methodological approaches and perspectives. Inspired by their work on erotic ethnography as “a more ethical\, mind-full and human-centered approach” the co-created space uses the erotic as a necessary tool to decenter normative ways of producing knowledge and develop collective practices for critical self-reflexivity in our research and activist engagements. \n  \nThe workshop encourages students and scholars from all disciplines and fields as well as creative and curatorial\, humanitarian and policy professionals from outside academic institutions to participate. DESCRIPTION:The Research Seminar “African History” of the Department of History\, University of Basel\, joins the Basler Afrika Bibliographien for a Lunchtalk: \n  \nGregor Dobler \n  \n Who counts as a „local intellectual“ in 20th century Northern Namibian history? Conceptual considerations\, some biographies – and the question of sources \n  \nA focus on the work of ‘local intellectuals’ has helped African history and anthropology to overcome colonial narratives of modernisation\, in which homogenous ‘local cultures’ stand in opposition to the modern world of independently thinking individuals. It draws our attention to differences in ‘the local’\, highlights the intellectual labour that goes into interpreting the world\, and makes us understand how critique of changing conditions (not least of colonialism) comes about. \n  \n  \nThe notion of ‘local intellectuals’\, however\, is also anchored in an elitist European understanding of intellectuality that favour certain ways of engaging with the world. It lets us look for people whose intellectual labor is explicit\, written down\, individualist and critical. This might hide other kinds of engagement which are often far more difficult to trace in archival sources. Using examples from 20th century Northern Namibian history\, I highlight the chances\, but also the constraints of a focus on local intellectuals. Without really offering solutions\, I ask if and how we can use an engagement with local intellectuals to develop a fuller understanding of how local interpretations of the world emerge. \n  \n  \nGregor Dobler is professor at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology\, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg i.B. (Germany). He specialises in Namibian anthropology and history. DESCRIPTION:Genocide\, trauma and memory are crucial topics in Namibian and Suthern Africa studies and are increasingly discussed comparatively. To facilitate such perspectives\, Erik Petry\, professor at the Centre for Jewish Studies of the University of Basel\, reflects on Israeli and Jewish experiences and discussions and combines these  with questions relating to similar experiences and traumata of Arab/Palestinian people.  He pays particular attention to the phenomenon of post-traumatic growth  (PTG) and argues for a trauma-informed world. In this short film\, the Namibian film maker Naomi Beukes provides an intimate look into one of the reasons for the devastating femicide that is shocking Namibia day by day: “We are who we are\, SURVIVORS”. \n  \nPrevious shorts of Naomi Beukes include “What to do with the Silence”\, in which she addresses the issue of domestic violence. Gender-based violence in Namibia and elsewhere and the visibility of queer Women of Colour is a pivotal theme throughout all her works. Her short film “The Wind on your Skin”\, shot with the local lesbian community\, let to numerous awards and nominations throughout festivals in Europe. DESCRIPTION:The presentation by Liam Kingsley is part of the Namibian and Southern African Studies Research Colloquium by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, the Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel\, and the University of Namibia. \n  \nLiam James Kingsley is a Ph.D. candidate in African History at Indiana University in the US. Their research deals with the intersection of disease\, ideology\, and state-building in Namibia during and after South African rule and explores the effects of apartheid\, exile\, and HIV/AIDS. \n  \nThe presentation focuses on the thousands of Namibians who fled during the independence war in the early 1970s and resided in exile camps in Zambia and Angola run by the liberation movement SWAPO. Leaning on their long history of engagement with the global community\, SWAPO deftly navigated the apparatus of international aid to achieve and maintain the medical capacity necessary for survival. The experience of working in the camps shaped the careers and approaches of the many medical professionals who would staff the health administration of Namibia after independence was achieved in 1990. \n  \nThis is a hybrid event. DESCRIPTION:In der Führung\, welche im Rahmen der Basler Geschichtstage stattfindet\, wird das mittelalterliche Tscheggenbürlins Hus am Klosternberg 23 gezeigt. 1765 liess die Hafnerfamilie Hug den Brennofen einbauen. Reste des Ofens wurden vor über zwanzig Jahren während Renovationsarbeiten nach einem Bibliotheksbrand gefunden und sind heute noch sichtbar. SUMMARY:(Re)defining the Mordern Built Heritage of Mozambique
DESCRIPTION:The presentation by Patricia Noormahomed is part of the Namibian and Southern African Studies Research Colloquium by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien\, the Centre for African Studies\, University of Basel\, and the University of Namibia. \n  \nPatricia Noormahomed is a Swiss Excellence Post-Doc Fellow at the Division of Urban Studies\, University of Basel. An architect herself\, she is currently a researcher for the FCT-funded projects ‘ArchWar — Dominance and Mass-Violence through Housing and Architecture during Colonial Wars’\, as well as ‘WomArchStruggle — Women Architects in former Portuguese colonial Africa’. At the University of Basel\, she is currently working on her postdoc project “Whose ‘shared’ heritage? A counter-narrative to the ‘authorized discourse’ through the modern heritage of Mozambique”. \n  \nThe presentation proposes a new way of understanding and interpreting Mozambique’s architectural modernity for its local recognition as cultural heritage. Rather than a static image of the past\, this legacy is analysed as an accumulation of appropriations and meanings constructed and superimposed over time. \n  \nThis is a hybrid event.
